Between Turkish, Greek and Arab musical traditions
Jiraan takes dialogue as its central theme and seeks meeting points between musicians and the different musical traditions they represent. And this is how Syrian, Turkish, Bulgarian, Iraqi and Belgian musicians find common ground.
Sirto is an instrumental form of music played in Turkish, Greek and Arabic musical traditions and closely related to a dance in which dancers join hands to form a chain or circle, led by a leader who occasionally breaks away to make not improvised. This dance is comparable to the Hora in the music of the Balkans and to the dabke in the Arab tradition of Syria, Lebanon and Palestine. Through this project, the roots of this dance music are revealed. Jiraan Ensemble enters here into a dialogue through improvisation and jazz sounds.
